PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange, which allows your staff to communicate internally (extensions). If you only have a single telephone in your business, most commonly just provided by your telecoms company, then chances are you don't have a PBX.

If you have several extensions in your company and staff can communicate internally by calling each other's extension, then you have a PBX.

An IP PBX differs from the old form of PBX which used to be analogue because an IP PBX uses VOIP (Voice Over IP). If you're not tech savvy and that just went over your head, the main thing you need to know is that in the past, a PBX would require totally separate cabling and infrastructure from everything else in your business. Now, with an IP PBX, it can run on your existing network or be integrated into your new one.

One of the main benefits is that you can save on infrastructure and simplify your network as an IP PBX can use the same physical cabling as you would normally use for your data (i.e. where you connect your computers to the local network). Each employee would have access to the local network and their own extension from a single point in the wall.

Of course, for networking reasons - as everyone's use case differs - let's say you would need or you prefer to have separate cabling for your handsets, you can still do that too. That's how flexible an IP PBX is.

Speaking of flexibility, you can switch extensions (carry one handset over to another location) and keep the same extension number easily. Everything is programmed and easily customizable.

Not to mention all the other features listed above that you can benefit from if you don't have a PBX at all at the moment. If you do have a PBX, you may have some of these features already.
